Karla Wente, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT
Doctor of Physical Therapy
Karla earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy degree from Washington University in St. Louis, consistently ranked one of the top physical therapy programs in the country. Dr. Wente also completed four clinical rotations in outpatient orthopedics, acute care, neurological rehabilitation, and women’s health. With a strong passion for specialty physical therapy care in pelvic health for women, men, and children, she completed a prestigious clinical residency in this subspecialty at Washington University. Following her residency, Karla earned her Women’s Clinical Specialist certification through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. She is also a certified lymphedema therapist, having completed additional education through the Klose Institute.
Devoted to furthering physical therapy education for future physical therapists, Dr. Wente has been a guest lecturer at both Northwestern University and Washington University as well as a lab assistant in pelvic health courses. She has also spoken at national physical therapy conferences and enjoys community outreach speaking engagements.
Dr. Wente highly values her volunteer work within women’s health and physical therapy. She is an active member of the Rehabilitation Advisory Council for the Worldwide Fistula Foundation (WFF) and has traveled to the Danja Fistula Center in Niger, Africa in both 2016 and 2017 as a medical specialist volunteer. There she provided pelvic floor clinical education to improve care for women with obstetric fistula. Dr. Wente co-founded the Chicago Young Women’s Pelvic Pain Support Group in 2014 to provide support and education to young women suffering in silence due to pelvic pain. She is also a devoted volunteer for both the International Pelvic Pain Society and the American Physical Therapy Association Section on Women’s Health.
In addition to her specialty education and expertise in women’s health and pelvic health physical therapy, she is enthusiastic about treating patients with orthopedic needs. She has trained extensively in applying a movement system based approach to identify the cause of a patient’s movement dysfunction. In addition, Dr. Wente is IASTM Hawk Grips Certified and uses these highly effective hands-on tools as an adjunct to her customized treatment plans in treating a number of soft tissue diagnoses that her patients present with. She understands that one painful joint does not work independent of the rest of the body and takes a whole body functional approach to treatment. Karla enjoys “being able to help empower my patients to reduce their pain and improve their overall function. For my pelvic health patients, I love being able to provide a safe space for them to share their story, so that we can develop a plan together to help them regain control over their life again.”
Karla also enjoys working with patients who experience head, facial, and neck pain, including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. She has taken specialty coursework to better treat this special population, and enthusiastically works with these patients to help them reduce their pain and improve their function with eating, talking, and jaw movements such as yawning, as well as oral hygience.
What people say about Karla:
“I had excellent results from working with Karla Wente. I highly recommend her and this facility to anyone looking for high quality physical therapy. She made sure I knew how to do each exercise correctly before she added it to my program to do at home. The program was specifically tailored to my needs and my results have been very satisfactory. She never left me to work on my own during my appointment or handed me off to an assistant. I always received one on one therapy. This facility was highly recommended to me by my father-in-law, who achieved remarkable results with another of the therapists here. I found Karla extremely competent, very professional and easy to work with. I have done physical therapy with other organizations in the past, but from now on I will use DPT Sport if I need physical therapy.” -April R.
“Karla Wente has worked with my cousin Bob since February. Bob arrived in a wheelchair and had not walked nor stood since his stroke in October. Karla went to work using exercise, strength therapy and her extensive rehabilitation knowledge. As of today (July) Bob is walking with the aid of a hemi walker and has walked with a cane and unaided under Karla's direction. Simply stated, Karla gave Bob his life back. We see progress each and every day. My only regret is that we didn't find Karla sooner as we started with Karla four months after Bob's stroke. Bob would probably be running by now, if we had started sooner. We are grateful for Karla's persistence and determination and her incredible knowledge of rehabilitation techniques for stroke patients. God bless you Karla for all you do.” -Carol C.
“Karla is extremely knowledgeable about women's health and pelvic floor and all other areas of the body so I knew I was in the best care! I went from unable to walk, sit, sit to stand, sleep, care for my newborn, etc without excruciating pain to being pain free in a short amount of time AND I also got a great education on my body and how it works best! It was a great, friendly atmosphere with 1:1 attention!” -Jessica G.
“Great experience! Our 8-year-old son had a rare medical situation, and we weren't getting any help from regular doctors. Karla at DPT was immediately helpful and really listened to understand our issue. The treatment was well-suited to our son and was effective. The scheduling and billing were extremely organized and appointments always started right on time. Highly recommended.” -Corinne C.
